Tom Morello, lead guitarist of Rage Against the Machine, will release a third studio album for his solo project, The Nightwatchman, on August 30th entitled World Wide Rebel Songs. Shortly before this in May 2011, Morello released an EP Union Town after being inspired by his performance in Madison, Wisconsin last February during the protest of an anti-union bill. All proceeds from this EP continue to go to the America Votes Labor Unity Fund via SaveWorkers.org. Continuing to benefit worthy causes, Morello has announced a three day Midwest tour, including Madison WI, Cleveland OH, and Flint MI, along with Rise Against’s vocalist and guitarist Tim McIlrath to benefit The Nation Institute (for more information click here). Created as a non-profit media center, the goal of The Nation Institute is to promote progressive ideas as well as strengthen and allow for independent press to thrive. “This year’s Justice Tour aims to support independent media which is battling the mountain of disinformation and propaganda foisted on the public by right wing media barons,” said Morello. “We will also return to the union battlegrounds of the Midwest to help steel the backbone of workers under siege.” (source here). All profits from these performances will go to The Nation Institute. For the Madison performance ticket information click here. It was recently posted that lead guitarist Michael Guy Chislett and drummer Andy Mrotek will be leaving The Academy Is… Although this will be a difficult loss to the band, there are no apparent harsh feelings. In a statement on their website, the band quotes that “We feel that this is the right choice for all involved to embrace changes, new hopes and desires that have individually taken hold.” Both members have recently been pursuing other musical careers; Mrotek working on his own band The Animal Upstairs and Chislett “co-writing, producing, and touring with various artists”. As for the remaining members, Mike, William, and Adam, there are plans to get back in studio and work on a fourth album. You can hear a clip of their latest work here.

The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011,
their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.

The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any
health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.

It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve What is beautiful and special about
the band and have it stay that way.

Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible
support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of the White Stripes’ intense and
incredible career.

Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from
The White Stripes in their Vault Subscription record club, as well as through regular
channels.

Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is
seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has
created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who’ve shared in those
creations, with their feelings considered greatly.

With that in mind the band have this to say:

“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong
to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is
that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your
involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

Sincerely,
Meg and Jack White
The White Stripes

Last week in Tucson, Arizona, Jared Loughner opened fire with a semi-automatic on a crowd of people at a political event. A previous classmate of Loughner later came out stating that Jared at a time listened to political punk band Anti-Flag whose lyrics inspired the name of the site you’re currently on. Alternative Press shared an exlusive interview with lead singer Justin Sane who claims that this act of violence is far from what Anti-Flag stand for.

Were you aware of the news when the incident happened?
Yeah, I saw it on the evening news. It was very moving and very chilling. I’m not ashamed to admit I actually teared up watching the news report. It was pretty bad.

When did you first hear your name being pulled into the story?
My sister called me that night. I was driving home around 11 p.m., and she informed me that a former classmate of the shooter had reportedly said something about Anti-Flag. Obviously, it was a real surprise because Anti-Flag are this band that for over a decade have been committed to non-violence and progressive change for justice, quality and peace. Certainly we have lobbied for health care—including mental health care—for all people. So to hear about someone who commits an act like this being associated with your band’s name, it comes as a real shock. That classmate apparently hadn’t seen the shooter since 2007, and that’s a long time ago. It’s four years. A lot can change in a person’s head and ideas in that amount of time—especially around that age. Maybe at one point, he “got” Anti-Flag and maybe the band brought something positive to his life. I highly doubt he was still listening to Anti-Flag, and if he was, he obviously missed the message. That said, he was obviously mentally disturbed, and that’s the one thing that strikes me more than anything.

Do you think this is a symptom of a larger problem?
Definitely. It seems like there’s a much bigger question that hasn’t been addressed yet. To a certain degree, that’s because it’s not time. The victims haven’t even been buried. We understand how painful this time is. [Bassist Chris Barker’s] sister was murdered [in 2007]. We put out a full release that year called A Benefit For Victims Of Violent Crime and donated all the proceeds to an organization that helps people deal with the loss of a loved one as the result of a violent act. One thing we’re well aware of is that people just need some time to grieve and mourn. There should be a level of respect for the grieving families before everyone delves into the hard-hitting issues like, “Why is this happening?” and “Where are we headed?”

Do you think blaming bands or movies on incidents like this is a cop-out?
First of all, there’s a 24-hour media machine. They need something to talk about. They’re gonna grab at every little fact or idea or rumor that they can and examine it because they need content. Secondly, in our society, we tend to focus on the minutia of the issue instead of the greater issue. Whether it’s Anti-Flag or John Lennon or Marilyn Manson [blamed for inspiring violent acts], that debate draws attention from the much bigger question: Why do we live in a culture that is so steeped in violence? When you look at our national policies—whether you think Iraq was a necessary war or not—America invaded Iraq. Millions of people around the world protested that invasion. They were trying to say to the United States, “You need to find a new way to deal with your problems.” Killing people and mass violence as a national policy is only going to lead to violence in your own society. I think when we look at the way our country goes about resolving its conflicts, it’s hardly ever peace-driven. That’s the statement that Anti-Flag have been making ever since we were a band. We have to find a way without violence because if we don’t, then what example are the young people of our country going to have? What are we going to be bringing back upon ourselves? To me, it’s not about these smaller factors of a band or one statement that someone said. It’s really about the hard work of looking at our country and the motivations of people in power like the military or Congress.

Do you think America is capable of that change?
To survive as a world, we have to. I do believe it’s possible. I’ve seen impossible things happen before, and I know that the U.S. is full of so many caring and brilliant and inspiring people. I think that’s the upside. That’s what energizes you to keep going when you’re in a band like Anti-Flag who are shedding light on problems. It feels like there’s so much negativity in the world, but then you travel around the country and meet these amazing kids and work with politicians that do positive things, and you realize we have a chance. But it’s gonna take a lot of hard work.

It seems like people who would blame Anti-Flag for something like this clearly haven’t taken the time to look into what the band actually stand for.
Yeah, when your whole stance when you started your band was to promote anti-violence, it’s a little surprising to hear your name dropped like this. I guess I have a frustration with the greater media in general. When Anti-Flag are raising money to build wells in Africa or working with Amnesty International or Greenpeace and you try to get someone to cover it, you’re totally ignored. That’s frustrating at a time like this. It takes something so sensational and horrific for people to notice. I think that’s a problem with the 24-hour news cycle. There’s just not an emphasis on the good that people are doing. That said, this event warrants discussion and the coverage it’s been getting. It’s a horrible thing that’s taken place, and I think a lot of people’s hearts go out to the victims and their families. People want to understand what’s going on and what happened. Hopefully, we can come away from this terrible event a better nation and a better people because we learn something from it. If we don’t, that would make this event that much more tragic.

Paramore has released their official statement on their website yesterday announcing the departure of two members of the band, guitarist Josh Farro and drummer Zac Farro. In the past, lead singer Hayley Williams was in a relationship with Josh that ended badly, causing the band to nearly breakup. These internal issues also led to a cancellation of a part of their European tour back in 2008. The band attempted to keep their relationship a secret, but finally came out with what really happened in one of the 2010 issues of Alternative Press. Although not every detail of their relationship rose to the surface, one can still learn all he needs to know about it in a majority of the song lyrics on their album Brand New Eyes. The past few years were a hectic one for the band, from the secret breakup, to Hayley’s naked torso being spread across the internet to millions of fans, and now to the departure of the two iconic brothers who helped shaped the band to what it is today.

“Over the past 6 years, our band has been through some of the most intense and incredible experiences of our lives. None of these things have been without trial. We’ve worked so hard to get to where we are and the fact that you are all still here with us says something about you that we will never be able to truly understand. You have stuck with us through thick and thin and we are so grateful. A couple of months ago, Josh and Zac let us know they would be leaving the band after our show in Orlando last Sunday. None of us were really shocked. For the last year it hasn’t seemed as if they wanted to be around anymore. We want Josh and Zac to do something that makes them happy and if that isn’t here with us, then we support them finding happiness elsewhere. But we never for a second thought about leaving any of this behind. We really hope that you can be encouraged by the fact that the three of us who are still here are ready to take on another chapter of our journey together. You have always been what keeps us going so why would we stop now? We want to stick by you. Knowing that we have a unified passion and a clear vision makes us feel stronger than ever.

The “blog” that was posted regarding everything that is going on with our band was a fake. We aren’t sure who did it or why… And we aren’t sure how they timed it this way. This is the first time that we have spoken out about what’s going on and we wouldn’t have released an official statement that important through a personal blog. So, we’re sorry for any confusion and just to remain clear, this is the first time we have spoken out about this.

We have some amazing things lined up for next year starting with our tour in South America. We are still coming to you and we are excited about who we are bringing with us! The tour is still on and we can’t wait to see you all.

As we look back, and now as we look with excitement to the future, in all of this what truly matters are the good times. The pictures of us with our arms around each other, the long van rides, your faces while you sing along as we play. Thank you for getting us right here to this very moment. We look forward to our best times. And we hope you will go there with us.

Love,
Hayley, Jeremy & Taylor
